今回は、TOEFL Integrated Writing Taskの回答例をご紹介します。

参考書を持っていない人に向けて
この参考書を持っていない人に向けて、軽く説明をしたいと思います。
この参考書を持っている人は、自分で解いた後に、私の回答を一つの例として見て欲しいと思います。
トピックは、一部の動物に見られる利他的な行動についてです。
生き残るためには自分の利益を追求するべきである動物が、なぜ他人の利益を増幅させようとするのか？
パッセージは、ミーアキャットと人間には利他的な行動が見られると言います。人間の臓器提供などを根拠に説明されています。
しかし講義では、これらの一見利他的な行動は本当は利己的であると指摘し、その根拠を説明します。
パッセージが主張を講義でことごとく覆すという、TOEFLのIntegrated Taskにありがちなパターンです。
これに対する私の回答が、以下になります。
TOEFL Integrated Writingの回答例
The topic of the lecture is the true motivation behind seemingly altruistic behaviour that the article claims. The article explains altruism as a selfless act from which the performer benefits little, using two examples of meerkats and one example of humans.
Firstly, the article claims that meerkats are altruistic animals. They stand guard while other meerkats eat food. They sacrifice their time to eat for other meerkats’ safety - an example of altruistic behaviour. However, the lecturer reveals that meerkats actually eat before they stand guard, so they are not sacrificing their eating time.
Second example is about the habits of meerkats standing guard. The one standing guard issues an alarm for other meerkats when it sees a predator. The article claims this habit as an altruistic act, because it puts the guard in greater danger of being caught by the predator for it has to flee alone. However, the lecturer contradicts that by saying that meerkats actually stand guard near a burrow where they can hide quickly when the predator approaches. Those hunting for food are actually in more danger because they move around when they hear an alarm, which could catch the predator’s attention.
Thirdly, the article uses the example of donating kidneys to relatives or strangers as an altruistic behaviour done by humans. However, the lecturer points out that donors have something to gain from this act - the appreciation from the recipients and from the society as well as a feeling of self-worth. To some people these are more valuable than anything and it could be argued that they are doing it for their own benefit.

TOEFLが定める150-225wordsを少し超えてしまいましたが、そこまで忠実に従う必要もないかなと思います。
最後に
私の回答が正しいかどうかは分かりませんが、私はこのような形で書くことでTOEFLのWritingで29点を取ることができました。
「こういう形で書くと高得点が取れるのかもしれないな」というように、一つの例として参考にしていただけたら嬉しいなと思います。
